Self-care is the practice of taking an active role in cultivating your own happiness and wellbeing. The World Health Organization defined it as, "the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote, maintain health, prevent disease, and to cope with illness with or without the support of a healthcare provider." Simply put, self-care is what you do to feel your best.
In the conversation on self-care, men have only just entered the chat. Many people have a misconception that self-care is for women. They think it’s about makeup, face masks and weight loss. Untrue! Self-care is for everyone. It’s highly personalized based on what makes you feel the best, and it’s time you start practicing it!
The good news is many men have expressed interest in learning more about self-care. A 2019 survey found that nearly 60 percent of men have started to engage in some self-care practices within the last five years, particularly men aged 18 to 34. Millennials and Gen Z are learning the benefit of taking time to look after their wellbeing through these practices, and it’s paying off.
The men from the survey who engage in self-care reported increased energy and clearer thinking as a result of their self-care practices. In fact, across the board, those who practiced self-care had a variety of mood-enhancing benefits. These were rated as more important than the physical benefits.

So what are some self-care ideas men can practice?
A study published in Yoga Journal found that the amount of men doing yoga is increasing, from four to 10 million between 2012 and 2016. Yoga involves a flow through movements, balances, aligning the breath with each exercise. It is a powerful stress-reliever, and can enhance your overall athletic performance.
2. Mindfulness and meditation
Mindfulness and meditation are among the most popular forms of self-care for men and women alike. Did you know that the average person has an estimated 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts per day? It’s no wonder we are feeling stressed.
Mindfulness and meditation involves quietening down these thoughts and worries. It can be as simple as sitting in a comfortable chair and letting your mind shut down for a few minutes.
Or, if you find this difficult, try a walking meditation. While walking, try to avoid paying attention to your thoughts. If they come, let them go.
The benefits include:
The best part is that these benefits can be achieved in just five minutes of meditation.
3. Skincare routine
A skincare routine for men is a perfect way to practice some daily self-care. Not only will your skin become softer, clearer, and brighter - you’ll also dedicate some time each day to unwind and focus on yourself.
So let’s assume you’re just starting out your journey into the world of skincare routines for men. It can get overwhelming. That’s why we’re here! Here’s a basic skincare routine for men with the skincare routine steps explained.
A cleanser should be used first. It should be suited to your skincare type, check out this article to see what skin type you have. Cleanser cleans the skin, removing the dirt and debris that has built up in your skin throughout the day and night. Forgetting to cleansing your skin daily can result in blocked pores, which can present as blackheads or acne.
Based on your skin type, you should then use a suitable serum. One of the best serums all-round is vitamin C. Vitamin C is great for dull skin, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and fine lines. It’s an antioxidant that fights sun damage and signs of aging. However, it should only be used in the morning. For your evening facial routine, try a retinol (vitamin A derivative) for aging skin, or alternatively, you can forgo a serum in the evening and skip straight to the next step.
Moisturizer is something all skin types will benefit from. Contrary to popular belief, moisturizer isn’t just for people with dry skin. If your skin is oily, it actually could be a sign that your skin’s hydration levels need balancing out. Excess oil production is often a sign that your skin is trying to overcompensate!
Men - you need SPF! According to reports, only around 14 percent of men put sunscreen on their face before going outside! This correlates with the surge in melanoma cases among men aged 15 to 39. Aside from skin cancer, not wearing sunscreen can also lead to hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and accelerated signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines.
Exercise is beneficial for the body and mind. That’s why it’s one of the best self-care ideas for men. A workout routine might not be your idea of self-care, and that’s ok! If self-care to you means relaxing, exercise might not be a good choice.
However, even going for a quick walk can help to reduce stress, improve mental clarity, reduce your risk of heart disease and other diseases, and improve your general physical health and emotional wellbeing.
Try listening to a podcast or some music you love while going for a walk, and see how great you feel afterwards. In terms of self-care for men, this will give you the most bang for your buck!
5. Facial treatments
Looking good is feeling good. We all want to put our best face forward. When you look your best, you feel confident. This isn’t just our opinion, it’s proven in science! A landmark study published in 1997 found that you can improve your self-esteem by taking more time to enhance your natural beauty. Whether that’s dressing well or getting a facial - when you look your best, it shows!
That’s why we advocate for men getting regular facial treatments. At Sisu Clinic, our most popular treatment is botox for men. Botox is a neuromodulator. When it’s injected into the skin, it temporarily paralyzes muscle movement, to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the skin. However, it has a plethora of other uses and benefits.
For example, masseter botox for men is very popular. This involves injecting botox into the masseter muscle in the jaw. This reduces the activity of this muscle which can prevent teeth grinding and reduce the appearance of a wide, jutting jaw. While many men want to achieve a square, wide jaw, for some men, masseter hypertrophy can lead to pain.
We’re Sisu Clinic, a doctor-led clinic that is revolutionizing the way aesthetic medicine is practiced. We are inclusive, which means that we are committed to helping men discover self-care and what it takes to look and feel their best.
Feel like botox is too far a stretch for you? Nick Jonas, of the infamous Jonas Brothers, recently partnered with Xeomin, a botox brand. Here’s what he had to say about botox for men, “Xeomin was something that I felt like was a good fit with my daily routines. I care a lot about what I put in my body and, and obviously, in an aesthetic treatment.
I really felt that Xeomin was something that I could be comfortable with and it wasn't overwhelming. While I didn't feel like I was a different person [by using it], it gave me that confidence that I think we all want to feel as we get older. There's this kind of stigma around guys talking about skincare and how we feel and, and the products we use.”
It’s not just Nick Jonas. In fact, rates of men getting botox is at an all time high. Since 2000, the number of men receiving injections has increased by well over 300 percent. According to a report by the American Med Spa Association, “Men are going to go from ten percent of the marketplace to 30 percent in the next decade due to male millennials”.
